In the book version Peckinpaw says 'snowbears'. This was the original strip. :)

Peckinpaw was stolen!!

Dear friends,

Leroy Brown with Freeze and Peckinpaw cutouts - convention — Leroy Brown with Freeze and Peckinpaw cutouts at a convention

It is with a heavy heart that I have to report to you that Peckinpaw was stolen from my table at OAFcon in Oklahoma. For over 10 years at every convention or ICECUBES book signing I have displayed my hand painted life sized cutouts of Freeze and Peckinpaw for the pleasure of young and old alike. I originally made them for my first big convention when I decided I did not want to print a vinyl banner like everyone else. I find the banners lack personality and are very expensive. So Freeze and Peckinpaw have always stood on my table and kept me company while I drew commissions or signed books. But on Saturday, October 24th 2026, Peckinpaw was stolen from the Grand Ballroom of the Embassy Suites in Norman, Oklahoma. The cutouts were hand painted with acrylics on foam core boards and were designed to fold up in the trunk of my car.

Why would someone steal Peckinpaw? It’s surprising, given that I had dozens of original comic strips for sale at a very reasonable price and would have been glad to do a commission as well. I can only hope that poor Peckinpaw has found a good home and is making some kid happy. So keep an eye out for Peckinpaw in case you see him pop up on Ebay or something. And if you want an original drawing, or even a painting, just ask for a commission and I will be happy to do it for you! It’s better to pay the artist than to steal.

Cool Comics Convention – OAFcon 2026

Posted on October 29, 2026 by Leroy Brown

It was great to meet new fans of ICECUBES at OAFcon last weekend in Oklahoma City. The convention was focused on vintage comics culture which is something I really enjoy. I got to see great original art by the masters and even meet Thomas Yeates, Bob Hall and Sam DeLaRosa to share tips and tricks. Mr. Hall and Mr. Yeates even took time to do portfolio reviews and give me some extremely useful feedback on ICECUBES the Comic Strip! It was a great opportunity and I look forward to going back next year!

Peckinpaw Painting

Posted on July 29, 2026 by Leroy Brown

Here is the painting of Peckinpaw for the cover of Vol. 3 “The Stuff of Dreams.” It was painted using acrylics although I would’ve preferred doing it with gouache but I didn’t have any and a full set is pretty expensive. I like the feeling of a painted cover. You can still get the book while supplies last by clicking here.

Here is a sneak peak at the color process for the new strip #367. This is just the ‘flats’ step which helps isolate the different color areas before applying more advanced painting techniques.

ICECUBES in French!

Posted on August 6, 2025 by Leroy Brown

Recently, I sent an ICECUBES story to a French language comics magazine called “Spirou”.
Spirou Magazine featuring the Smurfs.
Spirou is a classic cultural stalwart of European comics dating since before WWII. The magazine is perhaps most well known for premiering the world famous “SMURFS” along with other cherished European comics like “Lucky Luke” and “Gaston Lagaffe”. Spirou had an open call contest for a four page short story and I submitted an ICECUBES comic. While they did not select it to be published, it’s still fun to see the ICECUBES characters speaking French! You can download the entire story here, it makes for a good French lesson! >>

ICECUBES #362 – previz for subscribers

ICECUBES the comic strip 362 - previz — ICECUBES the comic strip 362 – previz

Hi wonderful subscribers, here is a color previz for the new ICECUBES strip #362. Note: this is not the final color which will be different on the final published comic. This is to show an intermediate step that happens before publishing. Color takes a few steps to finalize. This step is called ‘flats’ which then allows me to separate each color layer and work on them one at a time. There are a lot of hidden steps to get to the final published comic.
