Impressive,….but excuse me while I get technical here,…..how do you find that nib on the upstroke? Scratchy? How does it fare n the re-dip scale? Does it hold a fair amount if ink before forcing you o re-dip? I’ve tried the Brause Blue Pumpkin nib and although I do love the flex,…it goes dry waaaay too quick for my liking (even when using it conservatively).
I’ve been on a quest to find a xfine nib that has a really nice flex AND is smooth enough too handle an occasional upstroke.
I love talking shop! I searched for a longtime to find these particular pens. None of the Speedballs etc. come even close. I buy them from PenCity in Atlanta (online). Brause & Co. #513 and 511 are the best for me. They are flexible yet tight. This does lead to a short life span on the nibs though, since they are fragile and I tend to punish them. They DO catch on the upstroke, but that is more a function of the paper I find.
Finding the correct paper has been a real problem ever since Bainbridge stopped making the 178 cold press boards (the ones they sell now are made in China). So I go through paper manufacturers like crazy… disappointed with Strathmore for the most part.
Man,…I’m glad you mentioned the paper thing. I have spent a small fortune on paper and I still have the unused sheets and pads to remind me! I found a Canson Marker paper last month that is great for inks of EVERY type….and I can get it in a 11 x 17 pad but again….shipping fees..and added costs come into play and when I’ve got to think about family’s needs etc.(that’s a big factor for a family man like me)
The marker paper is very thin though and almost like a tracing paper but with no tooth. It’s really not bad,….but I’d rather find a thicker sheet because I tend to like to turn the paper as I draw my curves….
Everybody swears by Strathmore,…but I just don’t like it….its just not right for me.
I’m contemplating a strip,….but there are factors holding me back……I’m not thrilled with the business model that faces me today with the web and my time is too precious to just do this for the heck of it…..(a story for another day perhaps)
The whole Kindle thing has me keeping a keen eye on it,..but I’m just not convinced yet…
Well, I recently found some Crescent Art boards that I like. They are hard to find, but a good hot press board might suit you well. I like having some thickness so I can handle the page while I draw –and erase too 🙂
The biz of webcomics… oh boy, don’t get me started….

Leroy,..nice work! Is that a Fountain pen that you use? If so,..what type? Nib?

Thanks Togo! 🙂 I use a Brause & Co. metal nib #513. I use a Windsor Newton #0 for fills and I also letter by hand! I color using Photoshop.
Thanks for stopping by!

Sorry to bore you with this tool time talk.

Aaaargh! I realize I dropped some letters by typing too fast in my previous post.
Also wanted to add that I really like your style. Your pen work is so free and expressive!
