ICECUBES the comic strip. #0291

Speaking of technology, did you know that you can navigate through all the past ICECUBES comic strips on the website by simply using your arrow keys? Try it! Just tap the back arrow and watch last week's comic pop right up! If you think that's amazing, you're right and it's all in large part thanks to a guy named Philip Hofer, otherwise known as Frumph. testscreen-buttons Back in the day when I decided to put ICECUBES online, I had no idea how to design a website. So I did my best to cobble together a botchy WordPress site. Little by little, through intensive research I finally came across ComicPress. ComicPress was a way to publish comics that could be read online in an intuitive, user friendly way. Setting it up wasn't easy especially since I wanted to customize my page. That's when I reached out to Comicpress's creator Frumph. Lo and behold he didn't hesitate to teach me all kinds of things about php, css and sundry variables that would allow ICECUBES to end up looking the way it does today. Over the months and years Frumph was always there to help with coding. Recently he helped me with a new comics project I am about to launch. So I decided to thank him in this post and point out that he now has a Patreon account where you too can get help with your comic site.

Russel Harvey interviews Jud Hurd – Classic Cartoon History

Here’s a really interesting historical interview on the topic of newspaper syndicated comics from an insider’s perspective. From Peanuts to Lil’ Abner, Family Circus and Prince Valiant, this was the golden age of newspaper comics.

Jud Hurd (1913 – September 14, 2005) was a syndicated newspaper cartoonist. His work included Ticker Toons and Health Capsules (United Feature Syndicate) for which he was awarded the National Cartoonist Society Special Features Award in 1978. For 36 years he continuously published and edited the quarterly magazine Cartoonist Profiles. Beginning with its premier issue in the winter of 1969 and ending 36 years later with issue 146 in June 2005. The magazine was a great insider source for professional syndicated cartoonists.

Russel Harvey is the son of Alfred Harvey, the founder of world famous Harvey Comics. With titles like Richie Rich, Dot Polka and Casper the Friendly Ghost, Harvey Comics was a staple of family friendly comics and cartoons for decades. Russel is himself a cartoonist, writer and standup comedian. He is a long time supporter and fan of ICECUBES and has graciously allowed me to post this video.

I asked AI about ICECUBES.

Yes, there is a comic strip called “ICECUBES.” It is a newspaper-style, family-friendly comic strip and webcomic created by Leroy Brown. The strip features an ensemble of Arctic characters, including Peckinpaw the polar bear, Freeze the penguin, Eggman the walrus, and Nooky the Innupiaq Eskimo, who engage in humorous and often insightful cultural commentary from their icy perch atop the world. The comic is hand-drawn in the classic style of 20th-century newspaper strips, using nibs, brushes, and India ink on paper. It has been published for over 15 years (since 2009) and is available to read online at www.icecubescomic.com, where new updates are posted daily. The site offers over 200 pages of comics and blogs, and readers can access classic strips and behind-the-scenes content by becoming subscribers for $1 a month. Additionally, two volumes of collected strips, “ICECUBES Vol. 1: Noise Is News!” and “ICECUBES Vol. 2: THE i’S HAVE IT!,” are available in limited quantities through Chateau Books or as Kindle ebooks. Big Storm!

Peckinpaw in the Storm

Dear friends, As you may know, we just went through hurricane Beryl which turned out to be a terrible storm. Our power was knocked out for 10 days and our internet was knocked out for 2 weeks! We are just now starting to get back online and trying to put the pieces back together. Of course it was impossible to update the ICECUBES website and so you may have been wondering what was happening. In addition, my beloved wife has come down with a severe illness and my focus is on taking care of her. So you see, we have been pretty badly battered. I will endeavor to continue drawing new strips as often as possible. The best way for now to support ICECUBES is to keep an eye out for the new book that I will be launching on Kickstarter very soon. Also, please click on the ads. Thank you so much for your continued support and prayers. Leroy Brown

ICECUBES the comic strip #357 – Pencils

In this post I wanted to show how I ink in the lettering and speech balloons first. In fact, I haven’t even finished the pencils yet but my blocking is now in place. I will go over the blue lines with my 3B lead pencil to refine the shapes before the final ink. This workflow is probably the most effective in quickly getting a strip done with fewer mistakes and redoes. It also helps with overcoming resistance to tackling a new strip. This way, I can simply focus on what I know I need to get done technically before having to worry too much about the drawings. The drawings come last and I know exactly where they need to be. It’s a bit counter intuitive at first to work this way (we always want to start a drawing first) but it is without a doubt more efficient.

This Week’s Rejected Strip.

ICECUBES - reject
ICECUBES – reject
Dear friends, This almost never happens! I completed a new ICECUBES strip that I was going to publish this week but after taking a good look at it, I decided it wasn’t good enough for print… I just felt it was lackluster and it would be better to wait until next week for a better strip. So this week’s strip ended up in the dust bin. You can see, I actually tore it up. I know I can do better and you definitely deserve the best. So, please be patient and let’s look forward to a great new ICECUBES strip next week! Thanks for being such ‘cool’ ICECUBES fans!
