Felix & Friends #01

Ok guys, this week I decided to do something a little different. Since a certain famous mouse is in the news I thought it would be fun to do a cartoon with him. But then I felt I had to feature my favorite old time character Felix The Cat. I made this strip in the total old school newspaper style using pen & ink, flaws and all. I hope you get a kick out of it! Please tell me how you like seeing Felix The Cat in a strip. It was a lot of fun so maybe I'll do more. Leave your comments below!

Russel Harvey interviews Jud Hurd – Classic Cartoon History

Here’s a really interesting historical interview on the topic of newspaper syndicated comics from an insider’s perspective. From Peanuts to Lil’ Abner, Family Circus and Prince Valiant, this was the golden age of newspaper comics.

Jud Hurd (1913 – September 14, 2005) was a syndicated newspaper cartoonist. His work included Ticker Toons and Health Capsules (United Feature Syndicate) for which he was awarded the National Cartoonist Society Special Features Award in 1978. For 36 years he continuously published and edited the quarterly magazine Cartoonist Profiles. Beginning with its premier issue in the winter of 1969 and ending 36 years later with issue 146 in June 2005. The magazine was a great insider source for professional syndicated cartoonists.

Russel Harvey is the son of Alfred Harvey, the founder of world famous Harvey Comics. With titles like Richie Rich, Dot Polka and Casper the Friendly Ghost, Harvey Comics was a staple of family friendly comics and cartoons for decades. Russel is himself a cartoonist, writer and standup comedian. He is a long time supporter and fan of ICECUBES and has graciously allowed me to post this video.

I asked AI about ICECUBES.

Yes, there is a comic strip called “ICECUBES.” It is a newspaper-style, family-friendly comic strip and webcomic created by Leroy Brown. The strip features an ensemble of Arctic characters, including Peckinpaw the polar bear, Freeze the penguin, Eggman the walrus, and Nooky the Innupiaq Eskimo, who engage in humorous and often insightful cultural commentary from their icy perch atop the world. The comic is hand-drawn in the classic style of 20th-century newspaper strips, using nibs, brushes, and India ink on paper. It has been published for over 15 years (since 2009) and is available to read online at www.icecubescomic.com, where new updates are posted daily. The site offers over 200 pages of comics and blogs, and readers can access classic strips and behind-the-scenes content by becoming subscribers for $1 a month. Additionally, two volumes of collected strips, “ICECUBES Vol. 1: Noise Is News!” and “ICECUBES Vol. 2: THE i’S HAVE IT!,” are available in limited quantities through Chateau Books or as Kindle ebooks. Big Storm!

Peckinpaw in the Storm

Dear friends, As you may know, we just went through hurricane Beryl which turned out to be a terrible storm. Our power was knocked out for 10 days and our internet was knocked out for 2 weeks! We are just now starting to get back online and trying to put the pieces back together. Of course it was impossible to update the ICECUBES website and so you may have been wondering what was happening. In addition, my beloved wife has come down with a severe illness and my focus is on taking care of her. So you see, we have been pretty badly battered. I will endeavor to continue drawing new strips as often as possible. The best way for now to support ICECUBES is to keep an eye out for the new book that I will be launching on Kickstarter very soon. Also, please click on the ads. Thank you so much for your continued support and prayers. Leroy Brown
