If pro is the opposite of con would Congress be the opposite of progress.
Yep…seems like we are going backward. Some of the games people buy to play interactive stuff is almost like when we did stuff like that for real as a kid.

No kidding! It seems like they just try to imitate things that already exists. Like trying to make digital ‘inking’ look more ‘real’. I say, nothing beats the real thing!

I’m guilty of the digital inkin’ because I need to have something I can redo about a hundred times without startin’ from scratch.

Of course! Using computers to make art is fine by me. I do all my colors in Photoshop, not to mention fixing any inking errors. But I still like the natural line better. I think technology is good when it’s used for something you can’t do otherwise. When it just copies older techniques I feel its just kind of wasted.

Hey Leroy…where in the world are you buddy?

Hey Bo, I know I’ve been really quiet lately. I am waiting on word from the syndicates to see if there’s any chance of getting the strip picked up. I have been caught up in some other projects as well. It’s hard not to get burned out after 5-6 years without having a clear indication of being able to turn the strip into something viable- I need to continue to pay the bills! Thanks for being there and caring about ICECUBES, I’m going to do my best to get back online asap!

Moon Pie Dreams.

Posted on August 15, 2013 by Leroy Brown
Moon Pie As a kid I always loved Moon Pies. They’re sort of like magical ice cream sandwiches that can survive outside a refrigerator, with several delicious layers of frosting, cookie and marshmallow. These days I find myself craving them as a midnite snack when I’m hard at work on ICECUBES. Fortunately, my local Walmart stocks them including my favorite, the original banana flavor! One day I started wondering what it would be like to work at a Moon Pie factory. Do the people that make Moon Pies for a living ever stop to think: ‘Why am I doing this? What’s the point of making Moon Pies?’ All the machinery, the cooks, the packaging, the delivery trucks, etc. Sometimes, I wonder myself: ‘What’s the point of making comics?’. I’m not helping to solve the world’s problems or inventing new cures for disease, I’m just drawing a simple little comic. And then it dawned on me, that if a Moon Pie can bring me a small amount of comfort and happiness at midnite when I’m sweating over my drawing table, then perhaps, somewhere, somehow, ICECUBES can bring a little smile to someone too. That would really make it all worthwhile. So if I worked at a Moon Pie factory, I would tell myself that while I may not be helping to cure cancer, my work still had some meaning because somewhere, someone is enjoying a delicious midnite snack. 🙂

Charles ‘Sparky’ Schulz & Russel Harvey.

Charles Schulz and Russel Harvey A few years back I had the pleasure of meeting Russel Harvey, scion of Harvey Comics, at MoCCA in New York City.(You can read about our encounter here.) Since then, we have managed to stay in touch digitally and Russel even generously wrote a blurb for the back cover of ICECUBES the book! Russel posted this photo of himself with the great Charles ‘Sparky’ Schulz and I though I would share it with my readers. In particular I wanted to show everyone how incredibly big comics were drawn back then! I draw at about half that size these days. Of course that only applies to those of us who still draw on paper! 😉

New Happy Comics Page!

Happy Comics page newspaper Take a look at the new *Happy Comics* page in the Kingwood Monthly newspaper! A real comics page in a real newspaper, woohoo! It looks great and that’s thanks to terrific cartoonists Mark Stokes of Zombie Boy Comics, Mark Wilborn of Urban Jungle, Lonnie Easterling of Spudcomics and Michael Hawkins of Jim Corn! The August issue is being put together as we speak. Good stuff! 🙂

ICECUBES Syndication Submissions.

Posted on March 28, 2013 by Leroy Brown
Dear Fans! ICECUBES is being submitted for syndication to major newspapers. This would be the culmination of all the hard work put in over the years and the great support you have shown all along. But I can’t do this without you! It’s easy to help out, all you need to do is click on this link to the ICECUBES Facebook page and read some ICECUBES comic strips. Click on the pages you like the best and the pages with the most ‘likes’ will get submitted to the syndicates. This way you are helping to make sure they see the strips you like the most. I can’t tell you how much your support for ICECUBES means. I create the strip for you and always have you in mind. Through the emails and tweets, meeting you at the comic conventions and finally sharing the book with you, your support makes ICECUBES come alive. Thank you so much for reading ICECUBES and let’s work to make the strip even bigger and better! 🙂 Leroy Brown

Sketches for strip #0211.

Posted on January 17, 2013 by Leroy Brown
These are some sketches for ICECUBES the comic strip #0211 featuring Freeze and Peckinpaw. Freeze trips while playing with his phone device and Peckinpaw makes a remark about technology. I always make prelim sketches before committing to the original. It helps me figure out placement, body attitudes and action. In this example you can also see some of the writing process. The writing is never done until the final lettering is inked. I even make changes before publishing if something doesn’t sit right! 🙂 Here’s the final strip:
